MK statement on its National Conference

9 August 1991, University of Venda

Today we are witnessing history in the making in that our people`s army, Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK), has just concluded its first ever national conference in South Africa.

Participating in this MK conference were elected delegates who ranged from founding members through the Luthuli and June 16 Detachments to the "young lions" of the present.

This conference has laid the foundation stone for the legalisation of MK and charted the way forward not only for our army and the ANC but also for the future of our country.

The conference deliberated on four key areas, namely:

(a) Negotiations and Armed Struggle (b) Security forces in the future democratic S.A (c) Restructuring and reorganisation of MK and (d) The welfare of MK cadres

Key resolutions adopted at the conference were:

The Conference calls upon the world to maintain sanctions until the release of all political prisoners and return of exiles and until the terms of the Harare Declaration have been met.
