Death of MK Veteran Mvalelwa Elias Mbhele

The ANC in KwaZulu-Natal has learnt with shock and sadness of the untimely passing away of Comrade Mvalelwa Elias Mbhele.

Comrade Mvalelwa, aka Zulu, died last Thursday after a short illness. Born in 1940 in Umzimkhulu, southern KwaZulu-Natal, Cde Mvalelwa joined the African National Congress in 1957. He then joined the movement¹s armed wing UmkhontoWesizwe (MK) in 1961.

He trained in Oddesa in the former Soviet Union. He trained with Comrade Joe Modise, former Commander-in-Chief of MK.

After military training at Oddesa, Comrade Mvalelwa was redeployed to Kongwa Camp in Tanzania and many other places, including Zambia and Botswana where he was part of military operations fighting colonial and apartheid armed forces in Southern Africa.

He leaves behind a wife. Funeral arrangements have not yet been finalised.
