The ANC Gauteng supports the exhumation of the graves of Corlett Sono and Sibusiso Shabalala tomorrow (12 March 2013) at Avalon cemetery. The exhumation will commence from 09h00 to 13h00. The Missing Persons Task Team in the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) and the SAPS Victim Identification Center will conduct the exhumation of the two graves. The two persons were reported missing to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC). The two young men, who served as couriers for MK members disappeared on the 13 and 14 November 1988 respectively.
The Missing Persons Task Team has established that the two bodies with multiple stab wounds were found in a field in Diepkloof Extension, Soweto on the morning of the 15 November 1988. They were buried as unidentified persons with a large group of paupers in Avalon cemetery. The photographs of the two bodies have been positively identified by their families but the DNA tests will be conducted at the SAPS Forensic Laboratory in order to confirm the identities. The exhumation will be attended by the members of the two families and ANC leaders. The exhumation of the two graves will put a closure to the family on the political circumstances surrounding the disappearance of the two persons.
